Thanksgiving in Santa Fe

My Favorite Photo

Peering past the beer glasses in this photo are me and my sister. We are on the island of Crete in Greece where she spent a couple of summers doing archaeological work for the university she was attending. I stopped by that year while backpacking through Europe. Having purchased these, now defunct, sunglasses five minutes or so before this shot was taken, she decided to wear them anyway. I'm sporting the lenses and she the frames.

This is my favorite photograph because it not only brings me back to those fabulous adventures in Greece, but it also signifies a fresh start between my sister and I. Looking at this photo, you'd never know that we did not get along for nearly our entire lives up until (almost) this exact moment. Prior to that summer abroad, we would not have sat next to each other, let alone snap a smiling photograph. I'm so very glad we decided to grow up and become true sisters, sisters made up of more love than blood.

Sauteed Brussels Sprouts with Toasted Hazelnuts

I realize that I lost half of my readers at the mere mention of this mostly unpopular vegetable, and maybe you, too, are ready to click away, but don't! I haven't always liked Brussels sprouts either. Me, the girl who started on sushi at seven; the only girl brave enough to eat the dissected (and subsequently fried) squid in 9th grade biology. So I get it, I do. But these are different! I promise! These non-soggy, non-sulphury, slightly sweet and crispy Brussels sprouts are begging you for a second chance, and you should take them back because they really have changed.

Sauteed Brussels Sprouts with Toasted Hazelnuts

-1 lb. Brussels sprouts, roughly chopped

-1 T. olive oil

-1 T. cider vinegar

-1/3 c. hazelnuts, chopped and lightly toasted

-salt and pepper

In a large saute pan, warm olive oil until hot, but not smoking. Add Brussels sprouts and saute, stirring occasionally, until they soften slightly and lightly caramelize around the edges, but not so long that they lose their bright green color. As you saute, drizzle the vinegar over the sprouts, and season with salt an pepper to taste. Remove from heat and top with add hazelnuts. Best if served immediately.

I've been eating these by the bowlful lately!

They will definitely be making an appearance on my Thanksgiving table.

Loving Lately

Lately I have been loving leopard print. This is unusual given my decade long aversion to anything animal print (I blame a pink polyester snake skin skirt that I wore way too often in the summer of 2000...), but I just can't get enough. In fact, these shoes might be on there way to me as I type (my second pair no less - I had to size down from a 7 1/2 to a 6 1/2 - they run huge, but they are really beautiful). I can't wait to pair them with black cigarette pants, as well as the brights and neutrals that are trending this season.

My Favorite Photo

This is my favorite photo for many reasons. It was taken on my wedding day right after I was married to my wonderful husband Tanner. I look at this photo and see the calmness in both of our faces in the decision that we had just made to love each other for eternity. Every time I see this photo it takes me back to a day when I had a true smile in every photo. You would think we were photogenic, not so, we just were experiencing real happiness and every smile came easy. Our wedding day and the couple months we were engaged had so much hustle and bustle, but just for the moment of this photo the world stopped and it felt like just us, and that's all that mattered. We've been married now for just over 2 years. I'm glad we have this memory of our wedding day. I'll always cherish it.

I did my Halloween partying on Friday, at a party at my friend Liz's house. In true Liz fashion, everything was perfect, from the food to the decorations. There were games for the kiddos, drinks for the adults, and lots of treats for all. I am pretty sure I ate my weight in cake pops, artichoke dip, and pumpkin cookies, and I'm totally fine with it. After all, being a sailor is hard work.

1. Baggu bags. Like, love loving them. Thank you Ashley and Diana for bringing them to my attention. I need one in every color.

2. Edgar Allan Poe. I made the kiddos read "The Raven," "The Tale Tell Heart," and "The Cask of Amontillado." They adored them, and I adore when they adore reading.

3. Banana Republic boots. My search for the perfect pair led me here. Now I just have to decide.

4. Twinkly lights! I put some up in my bedroom and they bring instant happy.

5. Chunky sequin everything. A requirement for my holiday dress.

Beauty Obsession: Na-PCA

If I could only have one skin care product, Na-PCA would be it. It has been such a godsend for my sensitive, combination skin. My Favorite Photo

Here is the story behind this ridiculous photograph. In 2005, I was visiting my very dear friends (photographers themselves, they shot my wedding) in Northampton, Massachusetts. It was a year after I'd graduated from the University of Massachusetts and a year since I'd moved away from living in the same town as Fred and Melissa. I was there for a weekend visit and brought my now husband, but then just started dating boyfriend, Alex. They were meeting him for the first time, and I was kind of nervous about it. I really wanted them to hit it off.

In the lobby of their building, someone had left a big box of clothes for the taking. Without speaking really, Fred, Melissa and I came down from their apartment, saw this box in the lobby and immediately started trying on clothes and vamping. Because that's what you do when you find a box like this! At least that's what you do when you're with Fred and Melissa. Alex took the picture on a little disposable that I had brought with me and the rest is history. In case you can't see this crappy photo scan too clearly, I am wearing a fur coat, Fred is wearing some sort of hippie skirt, and Melissa has on goggles and is holding a boom box, somehow managing to look like a super hero.

This photo always makes my heart swell with love for these friends and makes me realize what a good effing time we always have together. We can have a party with just the three of us, every time that we meet. Give us a box of junk and suddenly we're ten years old again and playing dress up. Even though I didn't meet Fred and Melissa until the end of my senior year in college, they're the kind of friends that I feel like I've known my entire life. Luckily Alex fit right in that weekend, making that awesome threesome grow to four. I love how he is the one taking the picture and I can still hear him laughing behind the camera every time I look at this photo.

PS- I got a really good pair of jeans that I still wear today out of that pile!

Almost 3 weeks ago, my Grampa passed away. Within hours of getting the word, my mom and I headed to Arizona to take care of everything. In the process of cleaning out his house, I found his old Minolta A5 1000 camera. When I was growing up, every time my grandparents came to visit, this camera was draped around Grampa's neck and he was always ready to snap away taking pictures of all his grandkids. I always loved that camera & couldn't think of anything that reminds me more of him. I was lucky enough to inherit the camera still encased in the fitted leather camera case and stowed away neatly in the camera bag that resembles an old overnight suitcase lined with bright green velvet. The day before the funeral, I pulled out the camera and opened up the film door and noticed there was still some film in it (the camera is older & has no window to show if there is film in it or not). After quickly shutting the film door, and hoping I didn't ruin the pictures that had been taken, I rushed to the nearest photo shop to develop the film. I was thrilled that I didn't completely ruin all of the pictures - though they are over exposed. This photo is one of the last photos my Grampa took with that camera - a cactus in bloom in his front yard.

This is my favorite photo at this moment in time because it reminds me how precious the simplest moments- like that of a blooming cactus- really are and, even though those we love won't be with us forever, the memories & things we do to remember them are.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Syrup

After posting a photo of my pumpkin spice latte last week, a few of you asked me how you could make your own. Well, I did a little research, tested a few recipes, and this is what I came up with: A homemade pumpkin spice syrup that can be used in multiple, amazing ways! You can add the syrup directly to your coffee like you would any other sweetener, mix the syrup with cream for homemade pumpkin spice creamer, or warm the syrup with steamed milk for a latte. Non-coffee drinkers can add the syrup to tea, or to warm milk for a steamer. The best part is that it will keep for weeks in your refrigerator, so you can make a big batch enjoy it all season.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Syrup

-1 1/2 c. sugar

-1 1/2 c. water

-4 T. pureed pumpkin

-4 cinnamon sticks
-4 whole cloves
-2 cardamom pods

-1 t. ground nutmeg

-1/2 t. ground ginger

-1/2 t. vanilla extract

Warm sugar and water in a sauce pan over low to medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Do not allow mixture to boil. Add pumpkin and spices and continue to warm, stirring constantly, until mixture starts to thicken ever so slightly, about five minutes. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool for 10 minutes. Strain mixture through a very fine sieve or cheesecloth - lining a strainer with paper towels might also work - then stir in vanilla. Store in the fridge, it should keep for a few weeks.

I have been adding a few tablespoons (yes, tablespoons...) to my morning coffee in lieu of sweetener and topping it wish a dash of nutmeg. It's amazing and every bit as good as the corporate stuff. Take that, Starbucks!

I am excited to experiment with more coffee syrups in the future.

On Thursday, I received the sweetest package from Dorothy of The Kindled Scholar. Tucked into an adorable box were three books, a pack of cute page markers, a note, and a beautiful personalized notebook. The best part - It arrived on a day that wasn't going quite as smoothly as I wanted it to, and turned my entire mood around. Don't you just love when that happens? DIY: All Purpose Cleaner

Have you ever made your own all purpose cleaner before? It's one of the easiest things you'll ever do. Really. It's also thrifty and environmentally friendly - much safer for our animal and baby friends. And you get to choose your own scent! Let me show you how it's done.

All Purpose Cleaner Supplies

-spray bottle

-1 c. white vinegar

-2 T. Dr. Bronner's unscented castile soap

-4-6 drops essential oil

(grapefruit and lavender are two of my favorites)

-warm water

Just add the vinegar, castile soap, and essential oil (a single scent or a combination of scents) to your spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with warm water and give it a shake. The vinegar may cause the vegetable fats in the castile soap to temporarily solidify. This is normal and should disappear after a while. For extra-dirty situations, just mix a little of the cleaner with some baking soda to form a bubbly paste. It's perfect for cleaning sinks and showers.

That's it! Easy, right?

Now, go forth and clean, you domestic goddess, you!
Your home is going to look and smell as lovely as you do.

My Favorite Photo

This photo is of my baby brother Jared and I. He was four years old, and I was fourteen years old, in eighth grade. It was extremely late at night--probably 1 in the morning. He couldn't sleep, and I was trying to calm him down. I rocked him and kissed him and loved him, telling him everything would be OK. After a while, he fell asleep right there in my arms on the linoleum floor in the kitchen. It was so precious that I had my mom run to get my Polaroid from my bedroom. I had to explain to her how to work the camera without waking him up. She managed to figure it out. And now I have a visual remnant of one of the greatest memories I can think of with my youngest sibling. My legs and ankles on the floor were hurting so badly, but I wished and still wish he would stay that little forever.

Fall Reading List

I often hear about summer reading lists, but for me, fall and winter are prime times for reading. I love to curl up with a book and a cup of cinnamon tea at the end of a long, icy day. In that spirit, I put together a fall reading list. These all come highly recommended and I can't wait to dig in.

I am reading this book right now and thoroughly enjoying it. Sedaris has struck a nice balance between the sweet and the sarcastic.

I really adore Johnathan Safran Foer and can't wait to hear what his wife has to say.

I can confidently declare that Rushdie isn't for everyone, but if you like tales that spin and weave, and stories that fall back upon themselves in the most magical way, I would encourage you to give him a shot. I really liked The Enchantress of Florence.

Dorothy sent this my way, and I am so happy she did. It sounds moving and amazing.

My yoga instructor recommended this. I have skimmed it and it looks great! I am hoping that it will reenergize my yoga practice.

Another October Weekend

When it comes to October weekends, I am on a roll, Blogger, I really am. This was another wonderful one. I devoured lots of delicious homemade food (examples: vegetable curry on Friday night, vegetable noodle soup on Saturday night), spent lots of time cozied up to Coco O'Brien on my couch, did some shopping in Park City, and watched Let the Right One In - a creepy/sweet vampire movie, perfect for Halloween. I feel rested and refreshed and ready for the work week. Below are some highlights from my weekend, and yes, they are a little Coco heavy, but Blogger, she's so fluffy that I just couldn't decide.

My Favorite Photo

This photo was taken by myself two months ago in downtown St. Paul on our 5 year anniversary in Minnesota. My husband (pictured) surprised me with a small trip down to The Twin Cities. He is very low maintenance, and hates his picture taken, but I managed to get this one in front of a street sign that just happens to be his name, "Robert". I told him to go stand by it while I pretended to fickle with the camera. I was taking a while on purpose because when he knows he's getting his picture taken it looks so forced, and I really wanted to take something special as a gift for him. He naturally turned his head to look at something and I snapped it. This is what materialized.

The reason that it is so special to me is because it's the gift that I gave to him as a present to celebrate after we got back home, and he loved it. He is such a beautiful person inside and out, and is one of the few remaining chivalrous men out there. He is a wonderful husband, provider, teacher, friend and has saved my life in so many ways. He's not one who ever sees his worth, talent, beauty, or the magic that makes him one of those friendly warm people that most naturally gravitate towards. When I look at this, I see the man that I fall in love with over and over again, the one who would walk through fire for his family, has patience in abundance, is a lover of animals, feeds my creativity and soul, would do anything to make you laugh, and has a old spirit that perfectly syncs up with mine. I thank God for sending me such a man every day that I am alive, and am blessed beyond words to have him in my life.

A New Bag

For the past two years, I have been carrying around the same, two dollar, vintage Samsonite travel bag. It has served me well, carrying school supplies, scarves, water bottles, books, lunches, cameras, and cosmetics faithfully. I really wasn't planning on retiring it, until today. Until I saw this. Soon enough there will be a mortgage and diapers, school fees and piano lessons, but for now, there is this. And a beautiful bag somehow makes the weight of the world seem a little lighter, doesn't it?

Leaves and Biscuits

I'm back! And I hope you've missed me as much as I've missed you, blog pals. My life has been so busy lately, the good kind of busy, but not the kind of busy that lends itself to interesting blogging and to blog reading, so you'll have to forgive me for my lack of communication. Mostly I have been working hard to teach twelve year olds English, and taking a little time for myself in between. This past weekend was a wonderfully relaxing one, though, with lots of fun fall activities and good eats. Friday I stuffed myself full of Indian food and watched Drive - a good movie if you like 80's-style synth and mob violence, and a great movie if you like Ryan Gosling. Saturday, I bought a new bed - a queen. Finally! It's divine; I can't believe I waited so long. Now I just need some beautiful bedding (send suggestions my way!). Afterward, I met a funny friend for pizza and beer. Sunday was spent eating brunch at Ruth's diner and driving through fall leaves. There is nothing more gorgeous than Utah in the fall. And there are no better biscuits than Ruth's. In my opinion.

My Favorite Photo

I still remember the day I took this photo. After receiving a 50mm 1.8 lens as a gift, I attached it to my camera body and rushed out the front door. This flower was the first thing my eyes landed on.

As I wandered back inside, I felt surprised by the amount of joy brought on by a camera accessory.

Now I don’t have any plans on becoming a professional photographer. I don’t want to take cliche engagement photos in front of the Washington Monument, nor do I have aspirations to work for National Geographic. (I’m terrible at directing people, and lions scare me!)

Photography is simply a hobby. I have no pressure to be better than a competitor. I have no looming deadlines. Photography is for me. I love nothing more than coming home from a day of shooting to edit photos while I have Arrested Development on in the background.

Wherever your interests lie, find a hobby that is just for you. Let it bring you joy and grow you as a person. :)

How is it that a mostly low-maintenance, balm-only girl now finds herself with glossy lips on the daily? I blame the sample of Urban Decay Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Midnight Cowboy that I received from Sephora last month. It is slightly plumping, slightly minty, slightly nude, and only slightly shimmery. I think it's all those slightlys that make is so pretty. I'll definitely be purchasing a full-size tube when it runs out. Oh, Sephora samples, you get me every time...

Weekend With Dad & Grandma

I knew that my grandma was coming into town to visit me last weekend, but then, Friday afternoon, I got a phone call from my dad. He said, "Grandma wanted me to tell you to meet her here in the lobby, I mean, uh, in the lobby..." My dad surprised me with a visit! Or tried to anyway. The three of us had a wonderful weekend - ate lots of lovely food, put flowers on my grandpa's grave, went for a drive in the mountains, and ate more lovely food. I was also able to spend some time around a fire with friends. I really couldn't have asked for much more from the weekend. Here are some highlights!

A walk through the city.

Wine and homemade pasta at Copper Onion.

Birthday celebration complete with grilled donuts.

Brunch at Market Street Grill.

A walk around Silver Lake.

Enchiladas and margaritas with my grandmas.

I miss having my family nearby, but seeing them so rarely makes these visits all the more precious.

I can't wait to see them again at Thanksgiving!

I took this photo last year, on a day trip to Seville. The entrance fees to the Gothic Cathedral were steep and there were masses of people queueing, so I sneaked around to the back entrance and peeked in. I was rewarded with this view. I felt like I had stumbled upon a sight to treasure! This photo reminds me of why I am returning to live and teach English in Spain at the end of this summer, and gives me something to look forward to on rainy days!

Last year my boyfriend and I took a trip to Marrakech, Morocco, our first trip together in a long time.

Everything from that trip is burned indelibly on my mind because it was so special. But should my memory ever let me down I know this photo, taken by me on my little red Holga, will always transport me back there, because it seems to have captured the essence of Marrakech perfectly. The glorious sunshine beating down on us in the taxi we were in on our first day there. The warm breeze hitting my face through the open window, bringing with it the intoxicating smell of the dry desert: rich, sweet and dusty intermingled with the smell of warm spices from street vendors. The laughter of children playing in the winding alleyways ringing out. The array of vividly coloured rugs and scarves for sale on every street corner.

Marrakech is a other-worldly, truly magical place. I'm thankful to my Holga for letting me do it justice.

Vegan Coconut Milk Caramel Sauce

Caramel apples are one of my favorite things about the fall season, so I became super sad when I realized that they wouldn't fit into my mostly vegan diet. I started exploring the web for alternatives to the traditional cream laden caramel, and found some wonderful recipes for dulce de leche made with coconut milk. After trying a few, this is what I came up with. It could easily fool the most diehard dairy eater. And it's so easy to make! If you can boil water, you can make this caramel sauce.

Vegan Coconut Milk Caramel Sauce

-1 14 ounce can coconut milk - regular or lite will work

-1/2 c. brown sugar

-1/4 c. white sugar

-pinch of salt to taste

-1/2 t. vanilla extract

In a sauce pan, stir coconut milk, sugars, and salt over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Raise heat to medium high and boil sauce, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens - about twenty minutes. Remove from heat, allow to cool for a minute or two, and add vanilla. If sauce has an undesirable gel-like or lumpy consistency, process in a food processor, or beat with electric beaters until smooth and creamy! Refrigerate for up to one month. Serve over ice cream, on toast, with apple slices, drizzle over popcorn, or eat it with a spoon (my personal fave). Would also be sort of amazing with a dash of cinnamon.

Labor Day Thrift

This weekend was a dream. The air was cooler, the sun was shining, and I was able to do so many of my favorite things - eat good food with friends, attend a killer early-morning yoga class, and thrift. I went thrifting on Saturday and had such luck. I found items that I have been wanting to find for years. Items that made me squeal a lot. I may have even clapped and jumped. Here are a few of my scores.

I have long been looking for a beautiful crocheted blanket like the one that my grandma had when I was young, so I was thrilled when I saw this. The color scheme is amazing, and it is in perfect condition - no stains, no smells. Coco has already claimed it. $2.00

I can never get enough Pyrex. Especially turquoise. Especially refrigerator dishes. This size is perfect for small batches of brownies. $5.00

This Pyrex space saver was in sad shape, but with a little oven cleaner, and a lot of coughing, it's as good as new! Love the snowflakes. $1.00

This apron is going to make everything taste better. $2.00

This enormous, chunky, handmade cardigan is going to become my go-to lounging outfit while at home. Paired with a thick socks, I can't think of anything cozier. $4.00

This picture may be one of my favorite thrifting finds ever. I have been hunting for an embroidered piece of wall art for years, but the ones I find are always a little too kitschy - even for me. I think this one is absolutely beautiful. $2.00

I also found a 1950's floral tablecloth, an adorable embroidered tea towel with kitties on it, a second apron, and a lovely, and well-loved, handmade quilt. Perfect for cuddling under the stars on cool fall nights. In total, I spent just $22!

In addition to thrifting, eating, and yoga, I have also been cleaning and organizing my apartment, and setting aside items to donate. Out with the old, in with the new (but still old). How was your Labor Day weekend? Any good finds? Fun vacations?

A Girl Who Reads

I'm the kind of girl who always has a book in her bag. If I am able to steal moments here are there - during lunch break, or during my prep period - I love to get in a chapter or two. I've had great luck with books lately, so I though I would share a few of my recent favorites.

This is a haunting, tragic tale of a man who must walk.

It was at times painful to read, but the kind of book that will stick with me for awhile.

A hilarious social satire. I laughed out loud. A lot.

A layered look at the pre-9/11 Manhattan art scene. Steve Martin is one talented man.

I haven't finished this yet, but I can't put it down. A May-December romance set in a bleak, but funny, future. I can't wait to find out what happens.

My Favorite Photo

One day I walked in a village called Anti Syros, towering above the beautiful island of Syros in the Greek Cycladic islands. It was a place where coloured flowers peppered door stoops, and beautifully aged greek elders swept sidewalks and ‘shoo’-ed away stray cats. It was one moment in my 4 month backpacking trip in Greece and Turkey, but the aftertaste of peace and quiet have stayed with me over the last year living at home in Canada.

Once in a while, I pull out my photos of the trip and look at scenes like this one. I remember the differences between Greek and Western society; the beauty seen in layered paint chipping off to show age and experience, and olive oil cans used as planters-- much different than prim and proper western suburb yard décor.

The feeling of realization and peace dwell inside of me when I look at my favourite photos of this experience.

A New School Year, A List of Happy

The school year is off to a lovely start, and while I couldn't be more excited about the two hundred little personalities that I get to spend lots of time with over the next nine months, I find that it is also so important that I set aside time for myself. I could spend every night and all weekend planning lessons and preparing materials, but if I did, it would lead to burn-out city. So, I take time everyday to appreciate the things that are just for me. Here are the simple things have made me so happy lately.

Tomatoes from my neighbor. He grows the most incredible garden all around our apartment building.

My Favorite Photo

When I was growing up, my dad got in to ranching. I hated it then, but now that I am older, I do have a few fond memories of some of the things we did out at the ranch (like catching frogs in the pond the year it rained A LOT!)

I went home for a few weeks this summer, and one night, we all decided to go out to the ranch and shoot some old (and new) firearms.

This is my favorite picture right now because it was a truly beautiful evening. My daughter loves my sister (both pictured), and this just captures something about them both that I can't even put in to words. After I took this picture, my sister and I wandered around the ranch looking for an old owl that roosts out in one of the old barns, and we looked at a bunch of the old antiques out there and walked a bit down memory lane. This photo will always remind me of the things I love and what a great and simple night it was.

Beauty Obsession: Twirl by Kate Spade

I thought that I would always be a Michael Kors girl, so when I received Twirl in my August Birchbox and fell instantly in love, I was surprised. I am very picky when it comes to perfume. I like that Twirl is fruity, but has a slight floral undertone to keep it from seeming too young - perfect for ladies like me in their late twenties. I can't get enough.

technically speaking, this picture’s not great. it’s too dark. it’s not centered. robert and i are too far down. but this is my favorite picture ever, because it’s the only one i can look at and actually feel, really remember, the live moment in front of the lens.

it was 4:30 in the morning. i woke my slumbering husband up from our hotel bed. with only the nightlight, we got dressed in the dark, unfamiliar room. gathering our suitcases, we made it out to the parking lot within half an hour. it was freezing. the kind of cold that gathers in your bones and just sits there stagnant, not warming or getting any easier to maintain.

we chose our hotel for its location. it wasn’t the best, but it was clean and near the highway. we wanted to make sure we got there in time. the albuquerque hot air balloon fiesta was celebrating 25 years, and we had traveled halfway across the country to see it. a friend of mine once gave me a book titled, “1000 places to see before you die.” as soon as we got married, robert and i started opening the book to a random spot, moving our fingers down the page. and stopping. and going there. no matter where. this was one of those decisions.

we arrived around 6:30 in the morning, the new mexico air still icy. but there was a current in the air. as people swarmed about in their best eskimo attire, we found a little stand selling breakfast burritos. i’ve never had coffee as deeply and richly satisfying. we stood around and talked for about an hour as all around us, balloonists prepared.

then, the ascent. I swear you guys, the ascent!

everywhere i looked, in every single direction, hot air balloons peppered the sky. structures that looked like giants on the ground eventually faded into specks. there are very few sights that have literally taken my breath away. this was one of them. everyone should have the chance, at least once in their lifetime, to have beauty in front of your eyes in such a dramatic way. it was almost too much to bear and i felt weak.

we flew home the next day. back to our little home. we haven’t seen a hot air balloon since. that was two years ago. but i’ll always remember standing on that field with robert, his gloved hand in mine, as we gazed into the morning sky and felt so utterly, so perfectly, small.

Green Bean and Walnut Salad

I made this recipe last night (adapted from a Food Network recipe), and thought that it would last all week, buuuut I ate it all in one sitting... It was so good! And so healthy. If you have some green beans that need eating, I encourage you to give it a try.

Green Bean and Walnut Salad

-2 lbs. green beans, trimmed

-1/2 c. walnuts, chopped and toasted

-1/2 c. red onion, finely diced

-1/4 c. Italian parsley, finely chopped

-4 t. olive oil

-2 t. honey mustard

-2 t. cider vinegar

-salt and pepper

Boil beans for four minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water. Top beans with walnuts, onion, and parsley. Then, whisk oil, mustard, and vinegar together, pour over bean mixture and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Enjoy! But maybe not in one sitting.

My Favorite Photo

This picture is the first one ever taken of me, Caitlin, and my now-husband, Rob. I know it's not the best quality so please forgive that.

Rob and I met when I was a junior and he was a senior. We first got to know each other at a friend's house, where his band was playing, and began talking online all the time though I was dating his best friend. One night we confessed our feelings for each other and have been together ever since.

Maybe a year and a half after this picture was taken my husband joined the Army and we were separated for the better part of four years. We stayed together the entire time, through lots of ups and downs and through one perilous deployment (if you want to read the whole shebang of the story you can see it on my interblag -http://tomakelovestay.blogspot.com/p/our-story.html). I think this picture is my favorite one of the two of us because of the innocence it exudes; at this point we had no idea the fear we'd feel, the tears we'd cry, or the struggles that we would endure in the years to come...we were just purely in love and totally captivated by each other.

Don't get me wrong, I'm even more madly in love with him now than I was then, and the experiences we went through have only served to strengthen our bond. This picture just reminds me of the core of our relationship, which has always been two best friends very deeply in love who could walk through hell and back together, always together.

Vintage Fire King Jadeite Collection

Awhile back, I promised that I would share some of my collections with you, and I started with my vintage Pyrex collection, but then I didn't share anymore. I don' t know what happened. Okay... maybe I do. Maybe summer rolled around and I forgot how to do anything but sleep, eat popsicles, and tweet. But I am going to try to be better. Today I photographed my vintage Fire King jadeite collection just for you. I only have a small collection because the pieces are so expensive - usually twenty dollars and up - but that somehow makes it all the more special. These pieces have either been gifted to me, or purchased from a certain online auction site. If you fall in love and decide to collect vintage Fire King yourself, just be aware that reproductions are very common. If a piece is actually vintage Fire King, it will say so on the bottom.

I just can't say enough about Perfekt Cheek Perfection Gel in Blushed, so I've decided to dedicate an entire blog post to it! Rarely do I fall so hard and so fast for a beauty product, but this one truly has my heart. The color is amazing, similar to Benefit's Benetint, but with better blendability (a word that I think needs to be real) and some sort of magic something (caffeine?) that makes my flush look totally natural and gorg. I love it and I know you will too.

Santa Fe is Pretty Pretty

I am back in New Mexico visiting my family for a few days. Yesterday, we went to the Santa Fe plaza and watched a parade that was held for Medal of Honor recipient Sargent Leroy Petry. It was so touching! We also celebrated my birthday over a delish dinner at Santacafé and caught an amazing sunset - the kind that they only make in the southwest. I feel so blessed that I have been able to visit my funny, crazy family twice this summer. Here are some photos from my day.

28 Years Awesome

Monday is my 28th birthday and I can't believe it! My mom was 28 when she had me, so it has always seemed like such a huge milestone. To celebrate, my friends and I went out last night for dinner and bowling. It was so nice having most of the people I love most in one place.

What a fun group, huh?

Vegan Banana Bread

Post Punk Kitchen is one of my favorite websites for vegan eats and this PPK recipe, that I've adapted only slightly, is my absolute favorite for banana bread - vegan or not. It's moist and tasty and easy to make. Pull a few bananas out of the freezer and give it a go!

Vegan Banana Bread

-2 c. flour
-2 T. ground flax seed

-1/2 t. baking soda

-1/2 t. salt

-1 t. cinnamon

-1/4 t. allspice

-1/4 c. almond, coconut, rice, or soy milk

-1 t. cider vinegar

-1/2 c. white sugar + a bit more for sprinkling

-1/2 c. brown sugar

-1/2 c. Earth Balance margarine

-1 t. vanilla extract

-3 ripe bananas, smashed with a fork

-1/2 c. chocolate chips, shredded coconut, or chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease loaf pan - I used two Pyrex refrigerator dishes to make smaller loaves. In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt and spices, and stir in flax seed. In a small dish or cup, mix together milk and vinegar and allow it to curdle. In a medium-sized bowl, cream together sugars and margarine, then add vanilla, curdled milk and bananas. Carefully fold wet ingredients into dry - don't over mix or the bread will be tough! Add chocolate chips, coconut, and/or walnuts if you'd like. Smooth into baking dish - batter will be thick - and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for about an hour; bread is done when it is golden brown and a fork comes out clean. Enjoy warm, with a little margarine and a frosty glass of coconut milk. Heaven. : )

My Favorite Photo

I took this photo after my two young sons (28 months and 11 months) were tucked into bed. My two-year old had carefully and specifically placed his sippy cup and his little brother's giraffe teether the way you see them in the photo before we went upstairs for their bedtime routines. It is shots like these that I treasure most, because if I hadn't taken the time to take the photo, who knows if I would have remembered that moment at all? A mom and a dSLR are truly a good combo for capturing times like those. :)

Summer Berry Salad

I was invited to crash a all-girl, all-awesome book club meeting on Tuesday, so I brought this salad. Prep is super easy, so it's perfect for those times when you are busy or lazy - which seems to be how I feel all the time lately. I promise that I will get back into this blogging thing soon, but for now, there are just too many beautiful distractions.

Summer Berry Salad

-a variety of berries

(I chose blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries)

-a sprinkle of sugar

-zest and juice from one lemon

-a few fresh mint leaves, chopped

Just mix everything together! Best if eaten immediately.

This was taken SO long ago up the coast at our friend's beach house. That's me on the far right, with the huge panama hat on. The girl on the left is Caroline, my best friend at the time, we did everything together. The boy in the middle is Mathew, my mother's best friend's son. Caroline and I were completely in love with Mathew until we were about 10 year old. We used to jump on the trampoline together singing "I'm going to marry him! No, I'M going to marry him!" over and over. We each used to plan our married lives with Mathew down to the nitty gritty details of what clothes we would wear when we went out do dinner and the theater and things when we were all grown up. I still have hope! (Not really).

My Great Grandma's Garden and an Enormous Thank You

After a few days of pouting and putting it off, I finally sat down for a few hours today and started putting my blog back together. Because of my obsessive resizing habits, I think, I hope, that I will be able to find most of my pictures in my Photobucket and Flickr accounts - fingers crossed! So far, I have been able to locate all of them and I am thrilled! But I want you to know that, if it hadn't been for the support and positive feedback that I received from all of you, I may have just thrown in the towel. Your comments, tweets, advice, and emails made my silly mistake sting less and reminded me why I blog. Yes, it's been nice to have an online chronicle of my life, but what's been even nicer is 'meeting' and interacting with wonderful people like yourselves. Knowing that there are so many beautiful, kind people around the world is enough to get me through the worst of days. I'm tearing up just thinking about it! So thank you, thank you, a million times thank you for lifting my spirits. And as a small token of my appreciation, and to get the ball rolling on this blogging thing again, I want to share some photos that I took of my great grandma's garden. She is an amazing woman who, at 97, lives alone, drives, and maintains the gorgeous flower garden that she and my great grandpa planted over 60 years ago. I haven't done the beauty of her flowers justice, but I hope you will enjoy them just the same.

It's amazing to think that these rose bushes have been around since before World War II. I hope they'll be in our family for years to come.

Oh My Goodness...

I recently joined Google +.

Which is great, by the way.

But I had all these silly albums that I didn't want public, so I deleted them.

One of them was my Blogger album.

But I thought.

I thought.

"My photos will still be stored on my blog, so I don't need this."

I was wrong.

All my photos are gone.

Forever.

Almost two years worth of my best, most favorite photos.

I am totally heartbroken.

And maybe I'll try to fix it, or maybe I will just start over, but I need a break for now.

My Favorite Photo

This photo was taken New Year's Eve 2006. Shawn and I hosted our annual party and we rang in the new year surrounded by family and friends. It was one of those perfect nights, one of those meaningful moments when you look around and realize how FULL your life is. We were together, thankful and happy, ready to welcome a new year full of possibility. Our yard glowed with fireworks and sparklers, children squealing in delight as they buzzed around like fireflies. The stroke of midnight brought kisses and hugs and the promise of a new start. I'm not exactly sure why this particular New Year's Eve stands out in my memory so much. Maybe it was the simplicity. Maybe it was a turning point in my evolution as a woman. One thing I know, I visit this night often in my dreams. When I am down, I remind myself of the simple satisfaction I felt on that night. I look at this picture my sweet husband took of me and remember the peace I felt in my heart, dancing in the night air, under the stars and fire.

My Favorite Photo

I spent half of last year living in Aserradores, Nicaragua with my boyfriend. I was a surfing photographer at the hotel that he managed known as Hotel Chancletas (www.hotelchancletas.com). This photograph is taken at the only restaurant nearby, known as Al Cielo. It is owned by two men from France, William and Xavier. When I look at it, it brings my back to the beautiful feeling of being surrounded by a different culture, beautiful green nature, and the sense of freedom that I once had when I was traveling and constantly meeting new and exciting people. This photograph helps me to know that in my heart I am meant to be floating free, seeing as much of the world as I can, with the love of my life by my side.

I live in Europe and my parents live in the U.S.

There are days when I really miss my mom and days when I really miss my dad.

Right now, this photo makes me cry because I'm really missing my dad.

What I Love: Planting a Balcony Garden

"What do you do all summer?" is a question that teachers are often asked. And it's up there with questions like, "What is your favorite book/band of all time?" Or, "If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?" It's sort of unanswerable and puts me on the spot and I get frustrated when people won't accept smart aleck responses like, "What don't I do?" or really obscure responses like, "Things that I love." So. Here's my solution. Over the next nine weeks, I am going to make a point of documenting all the things that I love to do, but don't get to do during the school year in this new feature called What I Love. And then when people ask, I can say, "Well, I have this blog..."

Today I loved planting my balcony garden. I do it every year, but this year I really did it right with organic herbs, organic soil, and organic fertilizer. When I buy organic things, I feel really good at life, so you can imagine how amazing I felt today.

I also bought pretty adorable gloves to protect my fingers from slivers.

And Coco helped.

Together we planted:

-mint

-oregano

-rosemary

-cilantro

-chives

-Thai basil

-sweet basil

-lavender

But Coco didn't really plant anything, she just mostly ate all the chives.

I can't wait for these little plants to grow so that I can use them in my summer cooking.

I have one pot left. What am I missing? What should I add to my herb garden?

Other faves: "Towers" and "Michicant."

This album is definitely going to be a big part of my summer soundtrack and, if you don't have a handsome boy who will hook you up with a copy, I highly recommend you pick it up.

My Favorite Photo

This is my (current!) favorite photograph. It was taken on a sunny afternoon by my husband while our babe sat beneath me and babbled a constant slur of baby noises. I'm the photographer in our little fam so it's not often I get photographs of myself (even of my legs!) unless I've set everything up on a tripod with all the bells and whistles, so I love that this photographs isn't staged and I also love it becomes it's my life in a nutshell. My son and I are incredibly close and I love that my husband was able to capture our bond so sweetly- especially because, usually, he's incredibly inept when it comes to cameras... but you didn't hear that from me.

Discovering

I've been a bad blogger lately, but I am not going to apologize, because I have been using this time to enjoy my last days of work and my first official days of summer. Over the weekend I spent a lot of time with friends - caught two movies, made brunch with my girlfriends, hit up a bar with my bros - and I have already completed a few projects. I have cleaned out my closet, put a lot of things on eBay, and I am even thinking of doing a "Shop My Closet." Maybe. So far, the summer has been very productive; I hope it continues on this way.

Recently I have also taken a lot of time to discover my neighborhood. I've been here since August, but this is my first spring in the Avenues area of Salt Lake, and I can't get over how beautiful everything is! Every walk brings something new - a new blossom, a lovely old home that I have never noticed, and yesterday, these amazing egg shells. Something you should know about me is that I really adore robin eggs. The color is so gorgeous! And they are so tiny! I carried these to and from yoga yesterday just so I could photograph and display them.

So that's where I've been, and where I'll continue to be, but I'll try to be better about updating and responding to comments. Now I'd like to know, how have you been making the most of the season? What discoveries have you made lately?
